Too Late (Writing 101 – Prompt 5)

Ben placed the letter down on the dresser as he continued on to pack the rest of his belongings. Seeing the letter, reading it reminded him of how much he had loved Elisa. How much he still does, but he had put her through enough. How he found a letter, how it was meant for someone else, how it moved him so deeply and how that eventually started their love. He sighed to himself as he quietly closed the door behind him.

Elisa was cooking dinner with a sad smile plastered on her face, Ben came up and wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head against her right shoulder-blade. She started to cry, 14 years of marriage and all she had to show for it was a single tear. I guessed she had cried enough over the years that she just didn’t have it in her. Ben picked up his luggage and moved silently towards the door. He glanced at her one last time as they shared their last smile. They still loved each other.

Too bad that were never going to find out…
